Excavators are large wheel or track-driven machines. They typically have a long bucket arm attached to a rotating cab that can spin a full 360 degrees. These heavy hydraulic machines can be fitted with various attachments to handle numerous tasks including:
Backhoe loaders are equipped with buckets in the rear for dogging and adjustable shovels in the front for levelling and balancing. They can fit into tight spaces and perform tasks like moving dirt, back-filling, digging trenches and holes, and manoeuvring heavy pipes into trenches for installation.
A skid-steer loader is a small, yet very versatile piece of heavy machinery. It is able to turn on a zero-radius like a military tank and is therefore able to operate in very confined spaces. This machine is wheel-driven, which makes it an excellent choice for operating in muddy or snowy terrains. A skid-steer loader can be used for numerous construction and excavation tasks including, digging, compacting, blowing snow, grappling logs, drilling and jackhammering.
As the name suggests, trenchers are used to dig trenches. They are typically narrow and used for installing underground cables and piping. Trenchers come in various sizes—from walk-behind “ditch witches” to very large drivable versions used for cutting through roads and other heavy applications.
Earthmoving machines are designed for all sizes and types of construction jobs. They do much more than just moving earth and rocks. They are able to perform limitless jobs, making them indispensable on nearly all job sites.
